The backup copy is the most complete, best-organised picture of an organisation’s data. Modern platforms treat it as a source of security insight and a repository for AI, not just an insurance policy.
Legacy platforms such as Legato Networker and Veritas NetBackup did one thing with great reliability: protect data and satisfy compliance. Veeam and Commvault carried that mandate into the virtualised and cloud era.
Contemporary platforms such as Rubrik and Cohesity have changed what a backup is for. They are application-aware, so data is categorised automatically as it is protected. They keep immutable snapshots and air-gapped copies against ransomware. And they apply AI to the data they hold: anomaly detection, ransomware detection and sensitive-data identification through products such as Rubrik Security Cloud and Cohesity DataHawk.
Because the backup platform already holds a classified, complete copy of the organisation’s data, it is a natural repository for machine-learning initiatives. Data classification engines and pattern recognition run where the data already lives, and marketplaces such as Cohesity’s extend the platform with new capabilities rather than new silos.
The organisations getting the most from this shift take a unified approach to service management, security, data management and AI enablement, so that backup, protection and insight are one operation rather than four. That is where the value of the evolution is realised.
